Celem studiów na kierunku filologia polska jest wykształcenie wykwalifikowanych absolwentów, którzy zdobędą zaawansowaną wiedzę z zakresu literaturoznawstwa i językoznawstwa polonistycznego oraz pogłębią umiejętności i kompetencje społeczne pozwalające im na wykorzystanie wiedzy z tych dziedzin w dalszych badaniach naukowych lub działalności zawodowej. Opracowana koncepcja kształcenia pozwala studentom filologii polskiej na podjęcie specjalistycznych studiów obejmujących z jednej strony między innymi zagadnienia dotyczące najnowszej literatury polskiej, literatury popularnej, badań i metodologii teoretycznoliterackich, z drugiej zaś językoznawstwa ogólnego, historii języka polskiego i leksykografii. Program studiów drugiego stopnia na kierunku filologia polska wyróżnia koncepcja kształcenia zakładająca możliwość wyboru przez studenta jednego z trzech modułów: tradycja, nowoczesność, komparatystyka, a tym samym wyboru takiej ścieżki edukacji akademickiej, jaka w największym stopniu odpowiada jego potrzebom naukowym. W ramach każdego z modułów studenci mogą skorzystać z szerokiej oferty konwersatoriów, które z jednej strony są kompatybilne z ich zainteresowaniami, z drugiej zaś – spójne z działalnością naukową prowadzoną (również w ramach grantów) przez wykładowców. Daje to studentom niepowtarzalną możliwość włączenia się badania naukowe związane z interesującą ich dziedziną wiedzy. Studenci mogą także współtworzyć liczne koła naukowe.
Studia drugiego stopnia na kierunku filologia polska pozwalają na pogłębienie kompetencji i umiejętności zawodowych zdobytych podczas studiów pierwszego stopnia. Umożliwia to wybór jednej z trzech płatnych specjalizacji (edytorstwo naukowe i redakcja tekstów, filologia dla mediów iglottodydaktyczna) lub bezpłatnej specjalizacji nauczycielskiej. W odróżnieniu od studiów pierwszego stopnia wybór specjalizacji nie jest obowiązkowy, a uruchomienie każdej z płatnych specjalizacji zależy od liczby chętnych zdecydowanych na jej realizację. Proponowane specjalizacje stanowią zasadniczo kontynuację specjalizacji prowadzonych na studiach pierwszego stopnia na kierunku filologia polska i przygotowują studentów do pracy w różnych miejscach pracy (m.in. media, wydawnictwa, szkoły, instytucje kultury itd.). Wybór specjalizacji nauczycielskiej i glottodydaktycznej wiąże się z koniecznością realizacji praktyk zawodowych.
Wszystkie polonistyczne zajęcia odbywają się od poniedziałku do piątku na terenie Kampusu Głównego Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (ul. Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28), w gmachu Wydziału Polonistyki. Studenci mają w nim do dyspozycji w pełni wyposażone sale dydaktyczne, dwie biblioteki i czytelnie wydziałowe. Dostęp do literatury i niezbędnych narzędzi badawczych zapewnia też bliskość Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Warszawie. Studenci mają także możliwość włączania się w działania prowadzone przez liczne i prężnie działające koła naukowe.
Absolwenci studiów drugiego stopnia na kierunku filologia polska zdobywają szczegółową wiedzę z zakresu literaturoznawstwa i językoznawstwa polonistycznego oraz pogłębioną wiedzę ogólnohumanistyczną, pozwalającą im kontynuować badania naukowe lub podjąć kształcenie w szkołach doktorskich. Po ukończeniu studiów absolwenci umieją rozpoznawać, analizować i interpretować (również w ujęciu komparatystycznym) najważniejsze dzieła i zjawiska literatury polskiej XX i XXI wieku oraz literatury popularnej. Potrafią w stopniu zaawansowanym posługiwać się metodami badań historyczno-, teoretycznoliterackich i językoznawczych, przede wszystkim z zakresu językoznawstwa ogólnego, historii języka polskiego oraz leksykografii. Absolwenci potrafią także prowadzić samodzielne badania naukowe z wybranej przez siebie dziedziny, inicjować je lub włączać się w działalność większych zespołów badawczych. Mają umiejętności pozwalające na samodzielne przygotowanie rozprawy naukowej wraz z wszystkimi etapami je poprzedzającymi (zgromadzenie materiału, wybór metody badawczej, postawienie i obrona tezy, selekcja bibliografii, krytyczne ustosunkowanie się do wiedzy na dany temat) i zgodnie z najnowszymi osiągnięciami metodologicznymi z danego zakresu nauki.
Absolwenci studiów drugiego stopnia na kierunku filologia polska są także gotowi do zawodowego angażowania się w życie społeczne, naukowe i kulturalne. Ukończenie specjalizacji nauczycielskiej (pod warunkiem ukończenia tej samej specjalizacji na studiach pierwszego stopnia) daje im uprawnienia do nauczania języka polskiego w szkołach ponadpodstawowych, a ukończenie specjalizacji glottodydaktycznej – do pracy w charakterze lektorów i nauczycieli języka polskiego jako obcego w szkołach wymienionego poziomu.

understands and is able to explain the semantic, formal and pragmatic mechanisms crucial for the shape and content of the utterance; can recognise and indicate the elements that may give a language speaker problems with structuring a statement, as well as explain the mechanism of the difficulties; can identify and characterise the incorrect, correct and model pronunciation.
understands the aetiology of mental disorders in children, including early autism, ADHD, behavioural disorders, and other problems of the developmental age; can describe symptoms typical of various mental diseases in children.
has extensive understanding of disorders and retardations in the development of the language and speech system, knows various classifications of speech disorders; has excellent knowledge of language-related and non-related symptoms characteristic for a disturbed development of speech, and other disorders, such as aphasia, dysarthria, speech development disorder resulting from hypoacusia, brain damage and/or mental retardation, autism.
perfectly understands speech disorder treatment methods, methods for speech stimulation in children, interpersonal communication and procedures supporting the psychomotoric development.
can describe – relying on his/her knowledge – analyse and explain language and non-language symptoms of disturbed speech development or acquired speech disorders; can draw up a treatment plan allowing for a patient's possibilities and needs; can perform treatments on a patient and check the efficacy of the methods employed against the actual treatment effects and can collaborate with other therapists on building a successful programme of patients' re-education or recovery.
recognises, correctly analyses and helps to successfully solve the emotional and social problems of patients with disturbed speech development or with acquired speech defects, is aware of the responsibility for the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and has the gift of understanding the emotional and social situation of patients and their family members.
