Culture of the countries of the region in the European context – Ukraine 3224-D5EURUKR

The class aims to familiarize students with the main issues of
contemporary Ukrainian culture against the background of cultural
developments in Europe.
The class ends with a block devoted to the history and contemporary
times of Ukraine. Their aim is to indicate and analyze the relations
between the culture of Ukraine and the cultures of European countries and
to place the culture of Ukraine on the map of cultural phenomena and
processes that shape the contemporary face of European culture, with
particular emphasis on aspects that determine the similarities and
differences between the culture of Ukraine and other cultures of the
countries of the region. The material analyzed in the course includes
phenomena and processes related to cultural identity and diversity, forms
of social bonds and activities, and ideological trends and related practices
of institutionalization, contestation and emancipation (including the
situation of variously defined minorities, conflicts and mutual ethnic,
religious and social influences, subcultures, feminism), as well as literary
and artistic representations of these phenomena and processes. Particular
attention will be paid to the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the
development of culture in Ukraine, qualitative changes in its character,
and the way Ukrainians present themselves in the European cultural
context after 2014 and 2022.
Topics to be discussed:
01. Recap of feminist criticism, anthropology, gender theory, and
postcolonial theory. The concepts of elite and mass culture.
Postmodernism and pop culture.
02. Socio-political conditions of the development of Ukrainian culture in
the 2000s. Decommunization of public space and recycling of Ukrainian
Soviet culture.
03. Ukrainian postmodernism of the 1990s and 2000s: literature, art,
European context.
04. Ukrainian music of the independence era: from folk to the year. The
Eurovision Song Contest and its significance for the Ukrainian music

scene.
05. Artistic performance in contemporary Ukraine.
06. Main threads and topics of contemporary Ukrainian cinematography.
07. Ukrainian creators of online content. The role of social media in
cultural life.
08. Protest culture and art during the Revolution of Dignity. Russia's
invasion of Ukrainian territory and its impact on the development of
culture. Full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
09. Wartime literature: fiction, non-fiction.
10. Music after the full-scale invasion: the phenomenon of
bajraktarshchina, synthetic projects.
11. Dramaturgy of the "Great War": questions of occupation, violence,
refugeehood.
12. Cinema and the image of Ukraine in the world after February 24,
2022.
13. Gender during the socio-political transformation in Ukraine.
14. Ukrainian national symbols in contemporary cultural products.
15. Summary classes.

After completing the course, the student:
[Knowledge:]
– knows and understands at a basic level the specificity of various models
of culture in anthropological terms (traditional, noble, bourgeois, mass),
the processes of their transformation and mutual connections and
emanations in the symbolic and semiotic sphere, i.e. in the space of
culture and art, literature and history of Ukraine (K1_W03)
– knows and understands at a basic level the history of Ukraine and the
issues, concepts and historical concepts linking it with Central and
Eastern Europe as a region, with particular emphasis on cultural processes
and phenomena in the context of social and political changes (K1_W04)
– at a basic level the European and global context of cultural processes - is
able to apply this knowledge in relation to culture, art, literature, linguistic
phenomena, as well as political, social and economic phenomena of
Ukraine, Belarus and Poland at every stage of their development
(K1_W05)
– knows and understands at a basic level the broadly understood
intercultural context; has knowledge of man as a subject constructing
social structures and cultural products, is aware of the principles of their
functioning and the resulting differences in the perception of social life by
representatives of different nationalities, ideological and religious groups
and differently understood minorities (K1_W07)

– formulate and analyze research problems, select research methods and
tools, and conduct simple research in the field of cultural studies and
related disciplines concerning Ukraine under the supervision of a research

– develop his/her research skills, independently acquire knowledge, using
the support of a research supervisor; skillfully formulate thoughts, present
research results in the form of an oral or written statement (of various
types) (K1_U03)
– conduct a critical analysis of cultural products appropriate for a given
era in the development of Ukraine; recognize different types of Ukrainian
cultural products, analyze them, distinguish different perspectives on the
development of culture, being aware of the existence of differences in
cultural identity and context (K1_U05)
– independently prepare a written and oral statement, in Polish and a
foreign language, on selected topics from the field of cultural theory and
Ukrainian issues, present the results of their work in the group forum
(K1_U08)

– critically evaluate their knowledge, continuously improve their skills
and supplement their acquired knowledge (K1_K01)
– communicate effectively and live in society, including in a society
culturally different from their own, work in a group, cope with typical
professional situations, verify their views through objective discussion

Assessment criteria
I. The organization of classes:
According to The detailed rules of studies at the Faculty of Applied
Linguistics (The Resolution No. 114 by the Faculty of Applied
Linguistics Board of 19 December, 2017):
The condition for admission to the subject is mandatory attendance at
classes. In the case of classes of 30 hours per semester, it is permissible
to miss 2 classes without excuse per semester.
Classes will be conducted in the form of a seminar and discussion (open
discussion and in groups) on the assigned readings or material presented
by the instructor.
Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in
the discussion during at least 50% of the classes. For each topic, the
subject instructor offers students readings in text or (and) visual form.
The readings are provided to students by the instructor.
Class structure:
– introduction by the instructor (informational, problem-based)
– analysis of texts and/or film recordings (together with the group under
the guidance of the instructor with elements of e.g. brainstorming)
– open discussion within the class group and summary.
The instructor presents these requirements during the first class.
II. Assessment methods
The subject ends with an oral assessment (random questions), testing
knowledge of the readings and information presented during classes. A
presentation (or other oral statement) on a topic assigned by the instructor
is also planned. The final date for the presentation is the date set by the
instructor during the first or second class. Persons absent from these
classes are required to seek information from the instructor. Ongoing
recording of active and substantive participation in classes.
III. Assessment criteria
The final assessment consists of:
oral test (60%),
presentation (20%)
active and substantive participation (20%) – active participation in the
discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at
least 50% of the classes.
