GIS technology in geological mapping 1300-WGKGL
The GIS in structural mapping computer laboratory is dedicated to students of the 2nd year Tectonics and Geological Mapping specialization. The aim of the laboratory is to introduce the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, show its possibilities and directions of use in geological mapping.
During the course student learns the basics of GIS software. Learn how to geocode maps and work with spatial data in the raster and vector form (import, export, data edition). Student learns to elaborate structure, construct and work with databases. During the laboratory student learns the capabilities of spatial analysis of geological data and its application in geology. Familiarize with types of digital elevation models (DEM) and knows the DEM analysis capabilities using GIS software.
ArcGIS software is mainly using during the classes. Some program functions of Global Mapper and Quantum GIS software are also presented.
The course lasts 30 classroom hours (five 6h long meetings). Each class begins with a brief introduction. Then students perform exercises. Students work is constantly controlled and supported by the tutor.
Type of course
Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
During the computer lab student learn to:
- to transform coordinates between different coordinate systems,
- edit raster and vector data using GIS software,
- work with databases,
- perform spatial analysis of geological data
- analyze digital elevation models using GIS software.
Assessment criteria
The final evaluation is based on:
- student activity during the classes (30% of the final grad),
- oral exam (70% of the final grad).
A maximum of two unjustified absences is permitted. Each participant is required to create his/her own project based on data provided during the classes. The project should be submitted for assessment within the agreed deadline. The student receives a failing grade in the case of not meeting the deadline. Retake of the classes is maintained by positive assessment of the project delivered after the deadline.
Practical placement
none
