Geotechnical design 1300-OPGTW-GES
The lecture is intended to familiarize students with:
- history of geotechnical normalization in Poland,
- specificity and philosophy of Eurocode 7,
- general requirements for geotechnical design,
- determination of geotechnical parameters based on Eurocode
- methodology of obtaining geotechnical parameters,
- use of partial safety factors,
- types of limit states in geotechnical design (EQU, STR, GEO, UPL, HYD)
- verification of ultimate limit states,
- verification of serviceability limit states,
- design of retaining structures with particular emphasis on protection structures and deep trenches,
- schemes of direct foundation design and pile design,
- principles of geotechnical monitoring design.
Type of course
Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student:
- understands the importance and is able to assess the impact of soil and water conditions of the foundation and serviceability of buildings (P2A_W01),
- is familiar with theoretical principles of design, dimensioning and implementation of basic types of direct and indirect foundations in different soil conditions combined with the ability of modelling soil-structure interaction; has basic knowledge of geotechnical monitoring design (P2A_W06),
- can determine conditions of structure stability and designate its scope in a specific geological and hydrological situation (P2A_U01),
- understands the need for broadening knowledge and development of skills in the field of construction and geotechnics (P2A_K01),
- understands the need for teamwork in the realization of advanced research projects (2PA_K02),
- can introduce and explain social and environmental aspects of practical application of acquired knowledge and skills, including existing risks and possible environmental hazards (P2A_K03),
- is aware of conducting research and design works with regard to safety (P2A_K06).
Assessment criteria
Requirements for the exam:
- knowledge of the material presented in lectures,
- Knowledge of literature and data contained in legal documents (Polish standards, Eurocode) indicated by the lecturer,
- practical knowledge gained during the classes
The final exam has one primary and one resit term.
