Pollution transfer in soil and water environment 1300-OMZGC-GES
The classes are concentrated on:
• knowledge of equations describing mass transport in a saturated zone
• laboratory methods for determining the parameters of pollution migration in groundwater
• superposition of physical processes – advection – dispersion flow model
• formulation of boundary condition in mass transport models
• usage of stationary calculations of filtration field to assess the transfer of substances in the advection stream
• modeling of reaction of migrating substances with a matrix of rock
• taking into consideration the sorption interaction in terms of equilibrium meaning with using the sorption isotherms
• calculation of decay and biodegradation of dissolved substances in groundwater
• numerical model of mass transport in a saturated zone

Learning outcomes
After completing the classes a student:
- determines the parameters of pollutant migration and projects protection zones of groundwater intakes and reservoirs
- knows the main components of the process of mass transport in groundwater
- explains physical meaning of the mass transport parameters
- describes an aquifer structure system for the numerical calculations
- formulates the differential equations which is an approximation of the equation of mass transport
- describes relations of the delimitated system and the surroundings with boundary conditions
- calculates migration of substances according to the advective model transport
- understands the physical meaning of substance scattering as a result of hydrodynamic dispersion and can integrate this process in the calculation
- explains in a quantitative manner the consequences of sorption interactions in linear and nonlinear models with instantaneous equilibrium
- can include in the calculation a problem of persistence of substances in soil and aquatic environment
- solves the problem of mass transport in non-stationary model
Assessment criteria
After correctly (credited by the teacher) completion of all tasks, student can get final credit of the classes. A final assessment of the classes is based on colloquium with the correction taking into account the quality of completed tasks.
