Athletics section 4023-S-LA
The sport of athletics comprises four types of events: track races, cross-country races, jumps, throws and race walks. The primary (or classical) events, corresponding to the programme of the University Championships of Poland, are 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m and 3000 m races; 4×100 m and 4×800 m relays; long jump, high jump and triple jump; and discus throw, javelin throw and shot put.
Each training session includes: the initial part (organisational matters, the preparation phase, the main part and the final part (similarly to typical PE classes). In the first part, students are presented the subject and organisation of the session. The second part is a warm-up for students. It involves stretching of all the major muscle groups, as well as a series of special exercises relating to the particular event of athletics. A session ends with jog trot and calm-down exercises.

Learning outcomes
Students:
- will acquire the general knowledge of the human body and its functioning;
- will be able to exercise safely;
- will learn how to work in a team;
- will understand the need to stay fit in order to remain healthy;
- will be able to use sports equipment correctly;
- will develop special motor skills under the guidance of the Physical Education and Sports Centre’s staff.
Assessment criteria
Active participation in training sessions as well as competing for the University of Warsaw in sports events held in Warsaw and the University Championships of Poland are required to earn a credit. Students should attend at least two training sessions each week.
