The Microworld of the Koło Flea Market 4003-MTNK-OG
The classes will be a sociological-historical-ethnographic research seminar, which means that some of the research will be directly related to field work. The subject of this research (including: research, participant observation, in-depth interviews and surveys) will be the flea market in Warsaw's Koło. The microworld of the "old goods" bazaar - as Leopold Tyrmand wrote - remains one of the most delightful and intriguing places in the capital's landscape visited by locals and foreigners. You can buy anything here, meet anyone, consult a specialist and fall victim to petty shenanigans, get professional advice from a collector or a reprimand from an ordinary smartass. Various nationalities, cultures, social classes, professions and environments mix here. The bazaar serves numerous functions and creates unusual problems that the administration and law enforcement services must face. The diversity of this microculture will attract everyone interested in the sociology of the city. I am not proposing a ready-made research scenario, but working together, thinking about questions, identifying interesting research issues and dilemmas - working in the field. I would like this effort to result in a Varsavian publication and be our contribution documenting this small section of the Warsaw landscape, which will probably disappear over time.
