Azerbaijan in Russian Empire and under the Soviet rule 3600-TU-ARI-OG
Is known to have, the territory of Azerbaijan was historically a single centuries-old ethno cultural region and an integral geopolitical space. However, as a result of the Russian-Qajar wars and the conclusion of the Gulistan and Turkmenchay Treaties (1804/1813 and 1826/1828) between Imperial Russia and the Qajar State, the territory of the united Azerbaijan was divided into two parts: then the concepts of Southern and Northern Azerbaijan arose.
So, the subject implies the studying of the socio-political position of Azerbaijan during the Tsarist power. This course include the research of the history and the fates, the life and creativity such Azerbaijani enlighteners as Topchibashev, Bakikhanov, Mirza Kazem beg, Akhundov, etc.
Moreover, at that time the Russian empire used to send the Polish malcontents to exile Caucasus, especially, Azerbaijan. There was the oil boom in Baku at the edge of 19-20th centuries, which stipulated an active development of Baku city. Therefore Baku needed the professional architectures, engineers, oil and other industries specialists. Among them were a number of Polish representatives (Potocki, Zglensky, Ploshko, etc.) and every of them had own destiny.
Traditions of Azerbaijani philanthropy (Kh. Z. Tagiyev, M. Mukhtarov, Sh.Asadullaev, M. Nagiyev, etc.) will have significant place in our course.
Regarding the historical events in Southern Azerbaijan, so after accession to Russia, the territories and population of the divided Azerbaijan used to be developed under the influence of completely different cultures. Parallels and differences in the development of the social life of the Southern (the Pahlavi period, and also after victory of the Islamic revolution) and secular Northern Azerbaijan (the historical periods of the Russian Empire, the Soviet and post-Soviet periods), the attitude of the government of the Soviet Azerbaijan to the political events of Northern Azerbaijan in 20-40-s of 20th century are of a special interest in the proposed program. In frame of the rubric of History and Fates we will consider the position of the representatives of the science and culture under the repressions at the period of Stalinism.
The second half of 20th century is connected with the deportation of Azerbaijanis from Armenia in 1948-1953, the causes of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Black January in Baku and the movement for independence and proclamation of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan (1991).
