Cross-cultural communication in practice 3600-KM-KMP-OG
The aim of the workshop is to provide the participants with basic knowledge and understanding of intercultural communication specificity and cultural differences in communication (verbal and non-verbal communication, different communication styles, a.o. high vs. low context, direct vs. indirect communication, linear vs. circular communication, etc.) and also other cultural dimensions relevant to intercultural communication and interactions with people from different cultures (a.o. proxemics, time approach, assertiveness, or culture display rules). During the workshops students are going to gain knowledge about main challenges related to intercultural communication (language barrier and ethnocentrism) also they will be provided with effective coping strategies. Workshops are going to be practical: students will lean what are their own preferences regarding communication styles and what are their personal challenges in this context.

Students has a deep knowledge and understanding of:
Interactive communication model and it’s specificity in the intercultural context;
Cultural differences in communication styles;
The ethnocentrism phenomenon and its’ alternative - cultural sensitivity (intercultural competencies);
Cultural differences in terms of proxemics, assertiveness, time approach and cultural display rules;
Sources of cultural variance in terms of communication.
Student:
Recognizes, describes, analyzes and interprets cultural communication styles, using his/her knowledge, a.o. in the area of cross-cultural psychology;
Is able to give examples of different communication styles;
Recognizes his/her own preferences in terms of communication styles;
Can analyze, interpret and discuss the results of cross-cultural studies on communication;
Is able to work in a group.
Student:
Is aware that cultural differences impact the communication process and that there is no „one and best” cultural communication style;
Is able to adjust his/her own communication style so that it matches the context/ the other person;
Is able to explain the main characteristics of a particular communication style or cultural dimension (related to communication);
Discussing a certain style of communication/ cultural dimension, the student doesn’t favor or depreciate any cultures, s/he remains objective (the student is culturally sensitive/ intercultural competent).
Assessment criteria
Active participation in class.
Two individual written assignments „Critical incident analysis”. Detailed instructions will be provided during the first meeting by the course instructor. Group project: Intercultural communication case study
