How to Study the Culture of Others? A conversatorium on Research Methodologies 3600-IR-JBKI-OG
The objective of the course is to foster awareness among students of the processes occurring at the interface between the researcher's worldview and language and that of the studied representative of another culture. In addition, the course will address the methodology of describing this situation. The diversity, richness and dangers of this process will be considered and demonstrated through an analysis of classical texts from the fields of history, cultural anthropology and philosophy that address this issue. Specific attention will be devoted to the context of contact between representatives of European culture and the East, with a particular focus on ancient Persia and contemporary Iran. Additionally, the phenomenon of Eurocentrism and the terminology used to describe the 'East'/'Orient', 'West', 'Middle East', and other regions will be examined and analysed. This course will be particularly beneficial for students engaged in research and description of culturally diverse areas or selected elements of other cultures.
