The multimodal communication in face-to-face interactions 3322-KMIT-OG

Scientific research shows that interpersonal communication involves simultaneously many modalities. When we talk to each other, we express something not only with words, but also with gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. Therefore, building understanding between people requires paying attention to the information coming from all of these sources at once. The aim of the course is to present the results of research on multimodal communication that can facilitate noticing and interpreting multimodal messages in face-to-face interactions.
The classes are aimed at students who are interested in communication and want to increase its awareness, and do not necessarily deal with it on a daily basis during studies or at work.
The course is available on-line on the KAMPUS platform and consists of 15 modules. Each week, one module is opened and the scientific articles on a given topic and the tasks related to this topic are shared to be completed during the week. The last module summarizes the course and includes an overview quiz of 14 completed topics. After completing the on-line course, a written test is carried out in the classroom. The test consists of a task related to the content of the tasks from the course. The final grade is the average of two grades: the grade issued on the basis of points for completing the tasks of 15 modules in the course and the grade for completing the final task in the classroom.

Learning outcomes

Expanding knowledge on multimodal communication, in particular the challenges it presents to participants of interactions.
Introduction to the subject of research on multimodal communication, methods and results of these studies.
The development of communication skills.
Increasing awareness of the mechanisms of communication and competence related to the active and passive participation in the face-to-face interactions.
