History of Polish Folk Song and Dance Ensembles 3106-HPZ-OG
The course is designed for students whose research interests
revolve around folk music, dance, Polish culture, and cultural
transformations resulting from political changes. Due to the
topics covered, which intersect the fields of art studies and
cultural studies, the course is interdisciplinary.
The introduction to this course will be a brief lecture on the
genesis of song and dance ensembles, the cultural context in
which they were formed, and the transformations they have
undergone over the years. Subsequent meetings will take the
form of seminars, where students, based on assigned readings,
will have the opportunity for critical analysis of the tradition
of presenting folklore on stage, the social and political
functions that ensembles have served in different periods,
models of presenting folklore and song and dance ensembles
in various cultural texts (films, debates), and the
contemporary methods of promoting these artistic initiatives.
Students will also consider the roles of the amateur movement
in the protection of cultural heritage and the search for
identity. The culmination of the course will be attending a
selected concert or performance by a folk or folkloric
ensemble and writing a review of the event through the lens
of the knowledge acquired.
The objective of the course is to broaden the research
perspective of students engaged in the study of music, dance,
and Polish culture, as well as to develop their ability to
articulate substantive statements, present their arguments,
and enhance their erudition.
