The history of dance in the Polish canon of culture 3106-DTPOLK-OG

The classes will be devoted to the history of Polish national dances - both currently recognized as such (polonaise, mazurka, krakowiak, oberek, kujawiak), and those that have been removed from the canon (cossack) or only aspired to it (trojak, koseder, góralski dance) - from their beginnings, through all phases of transformation, up to the present day. The periods of the formation of the canon of national dances and the changes in the meaning of this canon in Polish culture (the period of pre-Romanticism, the period of modernism, and the period of socialist realism) will be especially highlighted. The classes will also be a pretext to look at the changes in the culture of court, peasant and bourgeois dances, as well as at various historical phases of theatrical and educational dance.

Prerequisites (description)

The aim of the course will be to familiarize participants with the issues of the canons of culture, various forms of the canon of Polish national dances, as well as the genesis, history and forms of individual dance genres included in their composition. The classes will also become a pretext to introduce students to the basic problems of the history of dance in Poland, the diversity of traditional dances in Poland, the basic issues of historical and traditional dances, as well as theatrical and educational dance.

Learning outcomes

Participants will learn about the canon of Polish national dances, the history of individual genres that make up its composition and their transformations. They will also learn about the broader context of dance cultures within which these dances were formed and functioned.
