Polish/Chinese Translation-1 3004-TPPC-PL+
A course in Polish-Chinese Translation tailored for students at the B1/B2 level of language proficiency.
1. Theory of Translation
a) Elementary terminology related to translation and translation studies (e.g. literary translation, applied translation studies
b) The process of translation.
c) Basic difficulties arising from Polish-Chinese translation and solving them.
d) Comparative analysis of translations made by professional translators aimed at demonstrating how theory finds practical application.
e) Presentation of rudimentary tools of trade necessary in translation as well as basic skills in browsing databases, dictionaries, corpuses etc.
2. Practical Exercises
a) Exercises in applied translation studies (translation of functional texts).
b) Exercises in translation of specialized literature in the fields such as economics, international relations, politics, history (political analysis, scholarly texts, speeches, historical sources from the 20th century etc.).
c) Exercises in literary translation (of both poetry and prose).

Learning outcomes
The student is aware of the current state of translation studies in both Poland and China and can name the most prominent translators operating in the two countries.
He/she is also able to identify the most important problems arising in the process of translation from Polish into Chinese in various disciplines as well as to discern and solve them.
The student knows how to use different dictionaries, databases, and browse for relevant information.
The student is able to understand and translate basic texts in the fields such as economics, politics, international relations, literature, history etc.
Assessment criteria
- Final test at the end of the course – 40%
- Attendance (only two unjustified absences from classes possible) – 20%
- Active participation in the discussions – 40 %
To obtain a course credit at the end of the semester, a student must show achievements in each of the above categories and pass the final test. A student who receives 0% in one category, will not receive a pass.
