Polish literature and culture of the 20th century 3004-HLIK20-PL+
Classes will be devoted to basic issues related to 20th century Polish literature and culture. They are designed to familiarize students with selected problems of Polish literature and culture of that period. Emphasis will be placed primarily on creators and works that are recognizable both in the country and the world, particularly important here will be reference to relevant, groundbreaking, award-winning, widely discussed and commented texts. Students will learn about the characters most important to Polish literature and culture of the 20th century. Listeners will be familiarized with literary, film, music and iconographic works.
The material will be ordered in chronological order and classic historical and literary periodization. Further issues related to Polish culture and literature will be discussed with students on the most representative examples and fragments and placed in a broader historical context.
During the classes various cultural texts and modern multimedia aids (e.g. movies, songs, maps, photographs, paintings) will be discussed and used.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student:
• has a basic knowledge of phenomena occurring in Polish literature and culture of the 20th century
• knows the basic historical events related to the history of Poland
• knows the names and works of the most important Polish artists of the 20th century and the basic concepts of the issue of culture after 1918
• can absorb and interpret various cultural texts
• can construct a longer oral statement on 20th-century Polish literature and culture and conduct discussions on this topic
