Polish literature and culture of the 19th century 3004-HLIK19-PL+
Classes will be devoted to basic questions related to Polish literature and culture of the 19th century. They are designed to familiarize listeners with selected problems of Polish literature and culture of this period and show, how they situate themselves against the European background.
The texts of the nineteenth century culture are important for understanding many codes and cultural references in the present and it is precisely the understanding of the present through the past that will be emphasized.
Participants will be acquainted with characters important for contemporary literature and culture and their works in chronological order (maintaining the division of the traditional periodical division into Romanticism, Positivism and Young Poland), which aims to help students assimilate and understand subsequent issues and help interpret subsequent texts.
The material will be organized in a historical order, the most important here will be the "personal" key - each class will be centered around a different writer / creator and his works, shown to students on selected fragments. The heroes of each class will play the role of specific guides to Polish literature and culture of that period.
During the classes various cultural texts and modern multimedia aids (e.g. movies, songs, maps, photographs, paintings) will be discussed and used, which will allow students to better and more comprehensively absorb the issues discussed and give the opportunity to create some kind of nineteenth-century collage.
