Popculture in PRL 2700-PPPL-OG
The problem of the broadly understood popular culture in Poland after the 2nd world war will be discussed in terms of the lecture. During the lecture students will see fragments of cult films, television series, and comedy shows of the PRL era, both Polish and foreign, showed at the time in cinemas and on the television. List of specific topics:
- The birth of popular culture and forming its nature
- The techniques and means of mass media
- The critique of popular culture
- Examples of productions aimed at mass recipients – cult films, television series, and televisions shows
- A close look at some of the most popular comedy shows of the PRL era
Each lecture is richly illustrated with audio-visual materials from the PRL era.

After completing the course, students:
KNOWLEDGE:
1. knows the most important terms concerning popular culture
2. possesses knowledge concerning the origins of popular culture as well as the techniques and means of mass media
SKILLS:
1. is able to discuss the characteristics of specific subcultures of the PRL era
2. knows examples of pop-culture films, television series, and television programs broadcasted during the PRL era
3. is able to list examples of productions aimed at a mass recipients in Poland after the 2nd world war
OTHER COMPETENCES:
Assessment criteria
When assessing the student what is primarily taken into consideration is the knowledge learned during the lecture as well that acquired independently at home, presented during a final exam. A requirement for passing the class is achieving a positive mark on the final exam.
