Media in the world 2700-MESW-OG
In the course of lectures of the subject are presented in terms of comparative media systems in the developed democracies, including the United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Mediterranean region, as well as the post-transformation countries (eg. In Russia) and selected examples from Asia and pan-Arabic media.
Characteristics of systems in the various countries include the legal framework, organizational structure and operation of key institutions of media sectors, as well as main traditional radio and television channels, news agencies and new media ecosystem of new media. During the lectures legal and market mechanisms and the cultural, historical and political influence on the systems and governing the operation and interaction in the system, are analyzed. The effects of media convergence and media pluralism, in terms of both structural and sector changes, are presented.
Classes are devoted to raising awareness lectures passed in relation to the key media in different countries, the comparison method of institutions and various media markets. Analyzed the problems of globalization of information, media concentration and internationalization of media and mechanisms for determining the operating conditions and limitations of the profession of journalism.

After completing the course, students:
KNOWLEDGE:
The student has general knowledge of the global media systems, including the functioning of the media in contemporary European countries, and power of media transformation affecting other systems, such as the U.S. media system.
The student recognizes media systems in a comparative context (liberal system, polarized pluralism and democratic corporatism).
SKILLS:
Recognizes the most important media institutions in these countries: the important dailies and magazines, radio and TV broadcasters, media companies, regulators of the media markets, etc.
- Analyzes the phenomenon of media globalization and concentration in the media sectors, legal framework and freedom of the media restrictions.
OTHER COMPETENCES:
Explains and compares the media characteristics depending on historical circumstances, market and legal; assigns national media institutions, and analyzes national and transnational effects of their actions on media markets.
Assessment criteria
Oral or written exam. Exam test covers the knowledge gained while participating in lectures, and partly in the practical classes. Minimum 60% correct answers allow to pass.
