The course will address the following topics:
1. The emergence of a multinational Muscovite polity as a
result of conquest of Kazan
2. The pre-modern paradigm: the case of Baltic Provinces and
the Cossack Hetmanate
3. The appearance of a modern national idea and its
consequences for the Empire
4. The incorporation of the Rzeczpospolita - the birth of “the Polish Question"
5. The Empire's attempts to meet the challenge of modern
nationalism.
6. The Polish Question, 1831-1905
7. The Rise of the Ukrainian National Idea and Movement.
8. The "Eastern" Nationalities - The Kazan Tartars
9. The Volga nationalitis and the “Ilminskii System”
10. The Conquest and the administration of Transcaucasia
11. Imperial policy towards Jews and its evolution
12. The National Question(s) during the Revolution and the
Civil War (1917-1921)
13. The Bolshevik attempt to solve “the national question” –
the policy of “korenizatsiia”
14. Stalin’s revision of “korenizatsiia” policy 1928-1953
15. The nationality fator in the collapse of the USSR, 1986-
1991
