International Law – Eastern Perspective 4035-SP-IL-OG
This course provides a foundational overview of public
international law (International Law 101). It examines the
essential doctrines and concepts underlying the
international legal system and equips students with a
practical understanding of its fundamental structures and
key actors, including states, international organizations,
non-governmental entities, and individuals. The course
aims to develop advanced analytical, evaluative, and
creative skills that enable students to engage critically
with the legal and political challenges of the contemporary
international arena.
Organized into up to fifteen interactive sessions, the
course introduces students to the theory, history, and
practice of international law. Participants will develop the ability to think doctrinally and critically about one of the
central institutions of international society. As global
politics becomes increasingly legalized, understanding the
principles, political dynamics, and challenges that shape
the international legal order is essential.
As global affairs grow more interconnected, the next
generation of professionals must be prepared to navigate
the complexities of international law, sovereignty, global
governance, and regional dynamics.
This program draws on the instructor’s extensive
academic and professional experience, including teaching
appointments at three universities in the United States and
a close familiarity with the competencies sought by
today’s employers. It therefore emphasizes higher-order
cognitive skills — moving beyond memorization toward
analytical reasoning, synthesis, application, problem-
solving, creative thinking, interdisciplinary connections,
and informed decision-making.
