Nationalism in the Balkans – national myths, politics, culture 4035-H-NB-OG
The basic analytical framework will be the concept of three
stages of development of national movements developed by
Czech historian Miroslav Hroch, but appropriately enriched by
such analytical approaches as Eric Hobsbawm and Terence
Ranger's concept of "invented tradition," Benedict Anderson's
"imagined community," and Krzysztof Pomian's stages of
development of European nations. The lecture topics will be
defined by various political and historical turning points, such
as 1) enlightenment and romanticism in the Balkans
2) the Tanzimat in the Ottoman Empire,
3) cultural national revivals
4) the Eastern Crisis and the Congress of Berlin,
5) territorialisation and national grand ideas and plans
6) 1908 and the Balkans Wars
7) World Wars I and II
8) the fall of communism, which will serve as a closing frame.
