Karate is a martial art whose history goes back to the origins of Buddhism of the Shaolin monastery. Today it is one of the world's most popular physical activities. Karate can be practiced by everybody, regardless of age and individual fitness. Karate may serve as general training for young people and efficiently harmonize the psychophysical development. For the elderly it is a means of staying healthy, boosting fitness and feeling fine. The Karate-Do Shotokan has been operating at UW since 1980s. We have won numerous medals during master rank contests. On Polish College Championships held in Olsztyn (2003) we won the first place among universities in general classification and the second place among all participating colleges. The classes currently cover:
OKINAWA SHORIN RYU - referred to as the oldest karate school (Shuri-te). The system was developed and taught by Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate. The Japanese word Shotokan comes from the name of the place (dojo) where Funakoshi taught.
SHOTOKAN (WKF) a modernized karate system; the most popular karate type in the world and highly ambitious to become an Olympic sport.
OKINAWA KOBUDO - original martial art with the use of weapons, often linked with karate. Karate is a martial art, a means of self-defense, and a philosophy. At Shotokan it is also a sport.response to various kinds of threat.
