History of Balkan culture 4018-SEM32-OG

The lectures are devoted to the Balkans understood as a historical and mental whole, which is a consequence of their linguistic unity. The topics in the first two semesters also include the history of the Balkan Peninsula from before the Ottoman conquests, mainly the later period of Byzantium to show the culture-building role of the empire, and also the process and means of Christianization. Also included are issues of the developing canon of eastern Christianity and the accompanying discussion on the admissibility of images as well as religious movements (Christian and non-Christian) considered heretical in different periods, as one of the key distinguishing factors of the subsequent Balkans. In the third semester, the classes will present the ways and character of Islamization, the development of Christian and Ottoman borderlands as the boundaries of the historical Balkans. In the fourth semester, the classes will discuss the beginnings and development of nation-building processes in the Balkans and the formation of national states from the 19th to the 20th century. This part of the course will discuss the influence of the ideas of Slavic mutuality, and also Russian Slavophilism on the development of national ideologies in the Balkans. Also discussed will be the issue of developing national separatisms starting from the 19th century, through the Balkan wars and World War II, up to the latest wars in the Balkans at the end of the 20th century. Thus, the lecture cycle will encompass the period from the Middle Ages to the disintegration of Yugoslavia at the end of the 20th century.
The bachelor’s and master’s seminar, accompanying the lectures from the beginning, is devoted to reading the texts quote in the lectures. The theoretical context for the reading is the problem of memory, tradition and developing national canons in the Balkans. The seminar is targeted at students writing their bachelor's and master's theses involving Balkan issues.

Prerequisites (description)

Students should have basic knowledge from general history and also anthropology of culture, be able to distinguish concepts such as "ideology", "myth", "utopia", "memory", "tradition", "literary canon", "national canon".

Learning outcomes

The lectures are devoted to the history of the Balkans as a historical and cultural whole, enabling students to understand the source of ethnic and religious conflicts as well as the region’s current complicated situation, but also its cultural diversity which is the result of many different cultural influences.
The seminar prepares students for writing their bachelor’s and master’s theses as part of the Balkan module.

In terms of knowledge, students will have basic knowledge on the types and the specificity of the object and methodology of the disciplines studying culture, know basic terminology from literary and cultural studies, know basic terminology from art history, have organized knowledge on the culture and language of the given Mediterranean region, be familiar with leading creators of European culture, know classical philosophy authors and their ideas, have basic knowledge on contemporary cultural life in Poland and in a given Mediterranean country.
In terms of social competences, students will be aware of the dynamic development of culture and the emergence of new research methods and paradigms, realize the importance of the heritage of antiquity in European culture, understand the importance of preserving the wealth, integrity and awareness of the cultural heritage of Europe, including individual Mediterranean traditions.

Assessment criteria

The seminar teaches students to understand texts and subject them to critical analysis.
