Central and South-Eastern Europe as a cultural project. Forgotten Mnemozyne 4018-KONW88-CLASS-OG

The course analyses the transformations of the Eastern Roman heritage within the “Byzantine community of nations”, i.e. in Central, Southern and Eastern Europe. We will study the presence of the Byzantine model of culture and its historical implementation (ideas, ideology, art, religion) in the long term, until the present day. We will consider the Balkans, eastern Slavdom, and Poland as a special case of the aforementioned model’s meeting with the West.
Outlining a broad historical and cultural perspective of the European South and East, included in the Byzantine heritage, will serve to increase students’ skills in synthesizing knowledge and moving easily in the maze of diverse discourses within the historical sciences. At the same time, the course aims to increase sensitivity to the unique identity of Europeans who have been shaped by the Greek civilization in a broad sense and the Orthodox faith. On the example of Poland and church unions, we will also highlight certain key problems related to the dialogue of cultures and cultural borderlands.

2. The concept of ecumenism in the Roman Empire and its transformation in Byzantium (the notion of the empire - authorities and citizens, the problem of ethnos, the cultural model, religious issues)
3. The vision of Byzantine missions
4. The project of Cyril and Methodius
5. The historical consequences of Cyril and Methodius’ project and the emergence of the Byzantine community of nations
6. Characteristics of the Byzantine model (ideas and ideology, power and authority, culture) in the following variants:
a) Balkan
b) Eastern Slavic
7. Poland vs. the Byzantine model
8. The concept of church unions - origins, political, historical and social, cultural, and theological dimension
9. The model’s presence in contemporary times (reception and inspiration)
a) ideologies (Slavophilism, pan-Slavism, Euro-Asianism, messianism)
b) culture (art and thought)
c) religion (theology, church organization, social dimension)
d) the model’s cultural consequences for European politics and integration
