Introduction to roman culture and literature 3700-WYK3-CS-OG

Students will learn the main development trends of Roman literature in epic poetry, drama, lyric poetry, rhetoric, historiography, and philosophical writings. One especially important section presents the achievements of the “golden age” of Roman literature, the time of authors such as Cicero, Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid.
Topics: the tradition of Roman oral culture; the oldest epigraphic tradition; the development of Roman epic poetry: Livius Andronicus, Nevius, Ennius; the development of Roman tragedy: Livius Andronicus, Nevius, Ennius, Pacuvius, Actius; the development of comedy: Livius Andronicus, Nevius, Plautus, Cecilius, Terentius; the birth of artistic prose: Appius Claudius, Cato the Elder; the birth of Roman historiography; republican satire - Lucilius; neo-Terentian poetry - Catullus; Roman didactic epic poetry - Lucretius; Cicero’s orations; Cicero’s academic-rhetorical prose; Cicero’s philosophical writings; historiography: Nepos, Salustius, Caesar; the works of Virgil; the works of Horace; the works of the Roman elegiac poets: Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid; Augustan historiography - Livius; the philosophical writings and tragedies of Seneca; Petronius’s Satyricon; Flavian epic poetry; Quintilian’s rhetorical synthesis; imperial satire: Persius, Juvenalis; imperial historiography: Tacitus; the biographical trend in historical prose; traditional poetry of late antiquity; the birth of Christian prose; Christian poetry; the Latin Church Fathers; the decline of Roman writings in the 5th century.
