Mythological tropes in language - words, concepts, contexts 3700-AL-TMJSPK-OG

The course is devoted to observing the processes of deriving vocabulary and concepts from the heritage of Greek and Roman mythology. Words adopted from classical languages constitute the largest and one of the oldest groups of loanwords in Polish vocabulary. The fate of words and concepts with ancient provenance varied – significant changes were observed in the meanings, connotations, ways of using words in texts, and their dictionary descriptions. The power of mythological stories often determined the attractiveness of the metaphorical potential of Greek and Latin loanwords. While observing the functioning of selected Latinisms and Hellenisms in contemporary Polish and in Polish dictionaries, we will explore general theoretical issues concerning interlingual lexical migration. Selected linguistic categories will be discussed in an accessible manner: processes of appellativization, onymization, semantic change, the concept of connotation, the linguistic worldview and conceptual blends. We will examine the principles and effects of these processes in the context of cultural influences.
We will examine the reception of ancient heritage in Polish concerning Polish dictionaries from various historical periods and contemporary corpus data. We will examine the linguistic and lexical functioning of artifact names, eponyms (eponymisms), proper names, phraseologisms, idioms and others. Lexicographic and corpus research methods will be used for this purpose.

Participation in the classes does not require formal completion of other subjects. Participants are not expected to master any specific knowledge or skills before beginning the course. A curiosity about learning, a willingness to explore, and the ability to think openly will be beneficial.

‒ has research skills that allow the formulation and solution of research problems in the field of cultural linguistics; is able to conduct basic analyses using interdisciplinary research methods and tools, and is able to conduct research and analyze source materials using appropriate research tools [K_U05]

Assessment criteria

The basis for receiving credit for the course is:
a) active participation in classes,
b) ongoing completion of class-related tasks,
c) final written test,
d) class attendance (with the right to two absences per semester).

Grading:
continuous assessment (preparation for classes and active participation) 40%,
final written test 60%.
