Sound & Vision 3700-AL-SV-OG
This course follows the development of art and music as sometimes separate, sometimes parallel, threads. From Antiquity to 1945, we will discuss the formal elements of both to better identify and explain the intentions of the arts. We will look at depictions of music and musical instruments in art, instruments as art, and hear music inspired by the visual arts.
Can we see sound? Can we hear a painting? By going beyond emotional impressions of a work of art, we will break down the elements of sound and vision in order to identify how those elements inspire the audience, make them uneasy, create catharsis and suspense, and more.
