Dictionary, encyclopedia, archive: semantic collections and cultural aspects of memory 3700-AL-SEA-OG
The aim of the course is to make students aware that marking is the basic aspect of the functioning of the cultural system. Culture is a sign system that creates collections of objects, values and meanings. We want to analyse this dimension of the functioning of cultural mechanisms on the example of such semantic collections as a dictionary, an encyclopaedia, an archive or, finally, a signature (which is not only a signature but also a kind of cultural marking practice).
It is commonly believed that dictionaries or encyclopaedias are books of useful value, although they are transitory due to changes in the language. However, these studies are something more, they are "palimpsest" books that create a specific vision of the language and the world. They are the product of a specific epoch, specific people who, although they do not have full freedom of expression like other artists, can create meanings and operate with someone else's text. Dictionaries and encyclopaedias bear the stamp of time, place, culture and customs, as well as ideological influences.
We will therefore talk about dictionaries and encyclopaedias as specific texts of culture and as collections of concepts, definitions and expressions describing reality and language. They are a kind of archive of culture. We will devote the most space to dictionaries, their types, the corresponding concepts of defining meanings, types of definitions and the very concepts of meaning. A dictionary, an encyclopaedia and, in particular, an archive are varieties of cultural memory, which we will also consider together.
