Polish-Ukrainian relations in the 20th century 3620-PUS-H-OG

During the classes we will examine Polish-Ukrainian relations - both in the sphere of politics and social and cultural life. They begin with a short review of the historiography and methodology of studies on mutual relations, then during the lectures, students will learn about subsequent periods (the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - relations in Eastern Galicia and Transnistria Ukraine; World War I and the Polish-Ukrainian war; Piłsudski-Petlura Alliance , Ukrainians in Poland in the interwar period, World War II and the Polish-Ukrainian conflict, Postwar years, Emigration and the role of Jerzy Giedroyc's "Kultura", relations on the threshold of independence, the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
During the seminar, students discuss individual problems based on their reading and analyze the chances - used and unused - for an agreement.

Prerequisites (description)

Classes addressed to Ukrainian-speaking students of the University of Warsaw. Their aim is to get acquainted with the history of Polish-Ukrainian relations from various points of view - mainly Polish and Ukrainian. Knowledge of the Polish language is necessary. At least passive knowledge of English and Russian is welcome.

Learning outcomes

Students acquire specialist knowledge of the history of Polish and Ukrainian society, master the latest historiography of the subject, acquire theoretical knowledge necessary for a researcher of the subject. Development of analytical thinking and a critical approach to literature.

1. Participation in classes (permissible 3 absences) 30%
