Contemporary Africa:socjo-political issues 3600-WAZSP-OG
The goal of the course is to familiarize participants with the dynamics of the socio-political situation in Africa. The course is devoted to the study of regional interactions between African states and non-state actors. The seminar includes the specific nature of the region and its main social and political problems. During the course there will be presented issues of international politics in Africa – problems with security, consequences of recent conflicts and turmoils, as well as the processes of institutionalization of the regional cooperation. Students will gain knowledge on social and political condition of African states and the elements of recent history of Africa. They will be obliged to follow recent events and news from the continent.
Term 2024L:

Having completed the course student:
- has extended knowledge of particular problems pertaining to the cultures of Africa within the scope of history and socio-political issues in a comparative perspective
- can search for, analyze, evaluate and use information on socio-political situation in African countries from different sources and can form critical judgement on its basis
- can analyze most important phenomena in the field of socio-political context of chosen regions of Africa
- acquires ability to argument on substantive basis in a discussion on socio-political context of chosen regions of Africa using other authors’ views
- understands the need to learn all one’s life, can inspire and organize other people’s process of learning
- can actively cooperate and work in a group as well as forge relationships and build social relations
- is open to new ideas and trends as well as cultural diversity
- understands responsibility and ethical issues that come with imparting knowledge of Africa
Assessment criteria
- Attendance control - a student can be absent maximum twice during the semester. In the case of absence due to illness, the medical
certificate excusing this absence should be submitted within seven days of the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
- Active participation in classes: discussions on current events in the region
