Workshop: When "No" Doesn't Mean "No": Hidden Meanings in Intercultural Communication (the Case of Azerbaijan) 3600-KM-WUZKM-OG
The workshop explores the hidden meanings embedded in intercultural communication, using Azerbaijan as a case study. It is based on the premise that the meaning of messages often extends beyond their literal content and that the interpretation of behaviour is shaped by social norms, interpersonal relationships, and cultural context.
The programme is divided into four thematic blocks. The first introduces the fundamentals of intercultural communication and examines Azerbaijan as a society situated at the intersection of diverse cultural traditions. Particular attention is given to the formation of contemporary Azerbaijani identity under the influence of its Muslim heritage, the Soviet experience, and processes of modernisation and Europeanisation.
The second block focuses on ways of expressing refusal, politeness, and social relationships. Participants will analyse situations in which seemingly straightforward messages may convey different meanings depending on cultural context. Special attention will be paid to communication strategies characteristic of relationship-oriented cultures.
The third block addresses hospitality, non-verbal communication, and culturally defined expectations concerning the roles of host and guest. Drawing on examples from everyday life, participants will examine the differences between more individualistic and relationship-oriented cultures and their impact on daily interactions.
The final block is practical in nature and involves the analysis of case studies, dialogues, and role-playing scenarios based on authentic examples of intercultural misunderstandings. Participants will work together to interpret communicative behaviours, identify the sources of misunderstandings, and develop effective communication strategies for multicultural environments.
The workshop is conducted in an interactive format and is based on discussion, case-study analysis, and practical exercises. Its primary aim is to develop intercultural competence, increase awareness of cultural differences, and enhance participants’ ability to function effectively in diverse social and professional settings.
