Workshop-The impact of religion on security issues in Nigeria 3600-KM-WRPBN-OG
The course aims to analyse religion's role in armed conflicts, based on the study of security issues in Nigeria. During the class, students will analyse the potential of religion to create and accelerate conflicts and stabilise security issues. We will discuss the religious map of Nigeria and the influence of most popular religions on security problems, such as long-lasting tensions between Muslims and Christians, as well as contemporary Jihadi rebellions organised by Boko Haram and West Africa Islamic State Province. Participants will analyse the role of belief systems in generating social insurrections, acts of violence and armed rebellions. The course will also focus on the stabilising potential of religion and the possibilities to take advantage of elements of religious traditions in peace-building
processes, based on the case study of the Yoruba ethnic group.
