Introduction to Oral Tradition of Judaism 3600-HE-WTUJ-OG
The main aim of the course is to teach the students the basic knowledge about the Oral Tradition of Judaism especially the rudiments of Mishnah, the core of the
Talmudic literature – the collection made by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi in 200. The Rabbis whose opinions are collected in the Mishnah are called Tannaim –
‘teachers’. The Mishnah, written in Hebrew, is divided into 6 parts – ‘orders’ (sedarim): 1) Seeds or Agriculture, 2) Feasts or Appointed Times, 3) Women, 4)
Damages, 5) Holiness or Holy Things, 6) Cleanliness or Purities. The main aim of this lecture is to enable fundamental understanding of the terms,
forms and formal character of the first document of Rabbinic Judaism.
