Cultural Sociology 3500-FAKL-SOCKUL-OG
The lecture presents issues of contemporary and classical cultural sociology as a perspective of studying phenomena and processes of social life in the semiotic and axio-normative dimension. It draws attention to the regularities of socio-cultural changes, in particular those that characterize postmodernity. It shows similarities and differences between research from the perspective of cultural sociology and those that are specific to the sociology of culture as a subdiscipline. Cultural sociology, unlike the narrow, specialized subdiscipline of sociology of culture, proposes a new perspective of studying broadly understood socio-cultural phenomena and processes - at the level of relations between individuals and communities. It shows the mutual connections between cultural phenomena and social phenomena. It presents a critique of the integrative concept of culture. Different and changing ways of understanding culture in the processes of modernization and postmodernity are discussed. The role of changes in communication media in the processes of socio-cultural transformation is shown. The multiplicity of cultural systems and their mutual relations are discussed. Attention is directed to the symbolic foundations of socio-cultural phenomena and processes, including the issues of symbolic power. Time and cultural memory take center stage in connection with issues of cultural trauma and trauma communities. The cultural dimension of the civic sphere, European cultural identity and the cultural dimension of globalization are discussed.
