Spanish for Linguistics Studies II 3305-NJHdCJ2-11W
The main objective of the course is to develop students’ communicative and grammar abilities, both orally and in writing. The course also includes elements of linguistics, centered around not only functional, but also formal and structural properties of sentences; learning about the semantic structure of sentences, or understanding of how the context of speech act affects the choice of language forms.
The goal is also to develop students’ awareness in terms of phonetics and phonology and the dynamic structure of language code used in the context of the culture of Spain and the Spanish-speaking Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Finally, the course, due to the linguistics-centered approach, should result in the enhancement of students’ ability to use Spanish, to participate in academic discourse at subsequent stages of the study. It is expected that students will perceive language as an object of interest and research.
Student:
I. Can play an active role in communication, reacts as an active receiver to the statements related to everyday life topics; can understand the main meaning of communication directed at him/her; is aware of the formal differences that exist between several variants of a particular statement.
II. Can communicate in simple and routine conversation, using the help of the interlocutor if necessary, but also he/she is able to keep a simple conversation going; is aware of the performative character of language and speech acts.
III. Is aware that different texts, of which he/she is the author or receiver, belong to the different categories of statements.
IV. understands informative and descriptive texts, as well as those about his/her studies and interests; can find specific information in available sources.
V. is able to write brief descriptions of events and activities (also in the past tense), is able to verify and correct linguistic mistakes in his/her own writings.
VI. is able to read and write different types of correspondence, especially personal letters; completes forms and surveys.
VII. is aware of the specificity of the Spanish language (e.g. the dominating role of the verb) as opposed to the Polish; perceives the heterogeneity of registers and the different scope of concepts in both codes, as well as syntactic differences.
VIII. becomes aware of the importance of the formal aspect of statement for its interpretation.

Knowledge:
upon graduation, the student knows:
• basic methods of text analysis, representing various registers and functional styles of the Spanish language; he/she knows the basic terminology in the description of the language and understands its sources and applications (K_W02);
• basic terminology of the Linguistics area, specific to Spanish language (K_W03).
Skills:
upon graduation, the student is able to:
• read and understand Spanish texts (K_U01);
• present their views, opinions, discuss, and present prepared issues in Spanish (K_U02);
• recognize different types of Spanish texts and conduct the basic analysis of their content and grammatical structures, using basic terminology (K_U03)
• independently acquire knowledge and broaden own competences using appropriate sources from selected areas of science and scientific disciplines relevant to Hispanic studies (dictionaries, lexicons, encyclopedias, source texts, monographic studies, etc.) (K_U04);
• write and edit a short essay in Spanish language, using appropriate methods (K_U05)
• prepare oral presentations in Spanish using appropriate methods and sources (K_U06);
• use basic terminology in the field of linguistics and other fields specific to Hispanic studies (K_U07).
Social competences:
upon graduation, the student is capable of
• a critical assessment of his/her knowledge and skills, independent and autonomous work; he/she understands the need for improvement and lifelong learning (K_K01);
• planning and organizing work, entrepreneurship and team collaboration, and compliance with professional ethics (K_K02);
• active participation in the culture of the studied regions using various forms and media; he/she is able to work in a team performing various roles (K_K03);
• Being informed about current processes and phenomena occurring in the language, culture, and literature of Spanish speaking countries (K_K04).
Assessment criteria
The condition of the approval in the first and second semester is:
- attendance and activity during the classes (2 absences allowed);
- getting a min. 65% of the 40 points possibile to recah in both semestres. The final result consist of:
• control tests (4 per semester) 20 p.
• written works (summaries , essays) - 10 points
• presence and activity - 10 p.
The final exam after the second semester is composed of:
A. Written exam, that includes the following parts:
1) lexical cexercise;
2) listening comprehension;
3) reading comprehension;
4) test checking the grammar corectness
5) essay
B. Oral exam, in the form of a student's short speech and a dialogue with the examiner maintained within the subject given.
The final grade will consist of:
a. written exam
b. oral exam
c. the approval of the classes
representing respectively: a. 60%, b. 25% and c. 25% of the final grade.
Detailed assessment criteria will be given in the course of the classes.
During each of the stages of assessment, there’s being taken into a serious consideration the requirement of shaping in the students the level of awareness of their knowledge, as well as the understanding of the need for constant development – both factors included in the learning outcomes. Thus, the ability to correct imperfections of ones own speech, a strive to express a given content with a higher degree of complexity and the capacity to held a dialogue, are being highly evaluated.
