Spanish for Linguitics Studies I 3305-NJHdCJ1-11W
The main objective of the course is to develop students’ communicative and grammar abilities, both orally and in writing. The course also includes elements of linguistics, centered around not only functional, but also formal and structural properties of sentences; learning about the semantic structure of sentences, or understanding of how the context of speech act affects the choice of language forms.
The goal is also to develop students’ awareness in terms of phonetics and phonology and the dynamic structure of language code used in the context of the culture of Spain and the Spanish-speaking Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Finally, the course, due to the linguistics-centered approach, should result in the enhancement of students’ ability to use Spanish, to participate in academic discourse at subsequent stages of the study. It is expected that students will perceive language as an object of interest and research.

Assessment criteria
Methods:
This practically oriented course provides students with the skills necessary for active participation in classes taught in Spanish, including the scientific study of language, as well as for participation in social, professional, and cultural life, in Spanish-speaking environments.
The course is based on a communicative approach, where the interaction between the participants and a teacher, group discussion, and exchange of thoughts are predominant in the course structure. The latter serves both to systematize the use of grammatical and lexical structures, and to shape the attentive attitude of language receivers.
Reading materials, sound and audiovisual recordings used in the classroom help students develop all language skills, with special emphasis on rich vocabulary and grammatical accuracy, which will enable students to better understand the academic courses taught in Spanish. In order to create and consolidate the habit of expressing contents with a higher degree of complication, the Students will compose writings that will allow them to practice more complicated language structures
The condition of the approval is:
- attendance and activity during the classes (4 absences allowed);
- getting a min. 65% of the 50 points possible to reach. The final result consists of:
• control tests (4 per semester) 30 p.
• written works (summaries, essays) - 10 points
• presence and activity - 10 p. (5 presence and involvement in classes/5 preparation for classes)
Detailed assessment criteria will be given in the course of the classes.
In case of a bad epidemiological situation, the form and criteria for passing the course can change.
During each of the stages of assessment, there’s being taken into serious consideration the requirement of shaping in the students the level of awareness of their knowledge, as well as the understanding of the need for constant development – both factors included in the learning outcomes. Thus, the ability to correct imperfections of one's own speech, a strive to express a given content with a higher degree of complexity, and the capacity to hold a dialogue, are being highly evaluated.
