Rebellious slave: baroque, enlightened and romantic (17th-19th century) 3304-2DXW-WM-NZ-OG
Against the background of the ideological and aesthetic changes taking place in France from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the figure of the rebellious slave, presented in various thematic and formal ways in the novel, proposes a specific solution to the dilemma of freedom, reason and... happiness. Is there a connection between the aesthetics assigned to the three titular styles and the way the rebellious characters are presented? If they are positive heroes, then on what terms? Are we observing a uniform tendency towards greater subjectivity, idealization or perhaps degradation of the hero? What do these directions of changes involve? What literary (artistic) balance results from them?
Does the authors' ideological commitment modify our reading? The distance between the past and present horizon of reception.
