Topics:
1) Evolution of Latin and emergency of romance languages. Phonetic, morphological and lexical changes of spoken Latin in Roman province of Gallia. Serments de Strasbourg – the oldest document in French.
2) The most important processes of vowel evolution: diphthonguization, palatalization, nasalization, vocalization. Evolution of consonants, their assimilation and reduction, the role of final –s. Phonetic spelling in medieval French, its trace in modern French spelling.
3) Nominal inflection in medieval French (noun, determinants, adjective) compared with Latin forms. Historical explanation for inflectional exceptions (nominal forms of plural, gender).
4) Verb forms in medieval French as explanation of modern French verbal inflection. Verbs in context (tense, mood) and their translation.
5) Syntax: word order of simple sentences, coordinate and subordinate clause.
6) Phonetic, morphological, syntax and lexical changes of French language from XVIth to XVIIIth.

Assessment criteria
Presence is obligatory, it is necessary to systematically prepare subsequent parts of theoretical material and translations. During the semester at least one written test. Passing the semester based on a written test checking the understanding of the Old French text and knowledge of selected grammar problems.
