History and Culture Course IIz/IIIz + p: Paris as an artistic melting pot (since the Revolution) 3304-1DZXW-KHK-26-OG
Paris, as the "capital of the 19th century" (W. Benjamin), was a place for the exchange of ideas and artistic impulses for artists from across Europe, and their activities inspired French artists in various ways. Opera played a particularly important role in the first half of the 19th century, as a space for the creation of works combining various artistic disciplines and requiring the collaboration of many artists (Rossini, Bellini, Wagner). Phenomena of similar significance in later periods included the so-called Paris School (École de Paris), the Ballets Russes, and others. The course aims to familiarize students with examples of works in which such cultural exchange came to the fore.
