History and culture course IIp : Poland in the eyes of the French from the 16th to the 19th century 3304-1DPXW-KHK-06-OG
The seminar "Poland in the eyes of the French in the 16th-19th centuries" is an introduction to issues related to the historical and cultural connections between France and Poland. The scope of the topic requires a selection of subjects to be discussed during the classes and the level of their development. The curriculum includes the following topics:
• The election of Henry Valois as King of Poland, the "discovery" of Poland by the French, its description by selected members of the king's entourage
• The election of Louise Marie de Gonzaga as Queen of Poland, the description of Poland by the French from her inner circle
• The election of Marie Casimire d'Arquien Sobieska as Queen of Poland, the description of Poland by the French from her inner circle
• The election of Maria Leszczyńska as Queen of France, and her father as Duke of Lorraine. Philosophical dialogue led by Stanisław Leszczyński with leading philosophers of the French Enlightenment
• Voltaire - "Writings against the Poles", his criticism of the Polish system and of the Bar Confederation as an element of a discourse orientalizing Eastern Europe
• Rousseau - "Reflections on the Polish Government and its Intended Reform", praise of the Polish system by Rousseau on the eve of the partitions (+ optionally Gabriel Bonnot de Mably and his observations on Poland)
• Casanova on his journey to Poland (alternatively Rulhière - "Polish Anarchy", or the letters of Mme. Geoffrin)
• Napoleon and Poland, French diplomacy and the Duchy of Warsaw (Talleyrand and ambassador Dominique Pradt)
• Mme. de Staël on her journey to Poland and Russia
• (optionally Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Poland in the eyes of the artist)
• Michelet and Quinet, the reception of Mickiewicz's lectures at the College de France, "Kościuszko" by Michelet, (alternatively Montalambert and his attitude toward the "Polish question")
• The romance of Balzac and Mme. Hańska, Balzac's "Journey to Poland"
• The romance of Chopin and George Sand
The course assumes regular work of students through activity in classes, preparation of a presentation on a chosen topic, and passing the final test.
