The Mother in literature and Culture 3302-MwLiK-BLOKI-OG
The mother is one of the oldest motifs in European culture, and it will never become obsolete. As a person, figure, character, idea, or ideal, she is described primarily in psychology, pedagogy, and sociology. Our interest will be focused on the variability of cultural discourse on her in literary texts and other artefacts. In the seminar we will concentrate mainly on Polish and German works translated into Polish, observing the variability of this discourse, which coincides with changes in the discourse on motherhood. In doing so, we will also link this variability to the historical context. In Poland, in this issue there has been a particular breakthrough during the emergence of the second wave of feminism, what is evident not only in prose but also in poetry. In painting, on the other hand, we can observe the instrumentalization of the mother as a topic.
