The Motif of Disaster in Prose, Theatre and Film 3302-MKPTF-OG

Can spectacular catastrophesas shown in disaster movies become reality?
The aim of the course is to familiarize student’s with exemples of texts, films, and other works of arts, which point out the feeling of danger in global society connected with the escalation of political conflicts, pandemic, terrorist acts or disruption of the natural balance in nature. Selected films and literary works will be presented against the background of historical events and the social and political situation in the 20th and 21st centuries (with particular emphasis on the German-speaking countries).

During the classes, we will also discusse the following issues:
- key concepts (dystopia, crisis, catastrophe, etc.);
- visions of the destruction of the world in selected literary and film works;
- diagnosis of contemporary society in the works of selected sociologists.
