Apocalypse Now? Wizje końca świata w filmie, literaturze i malarstwie 3302-ABKE-OG
During our classes we are going to discuss the following topics:
- key concepts (blackout, crisis, catastrophe, etc.);
- the arms race during the Cold War and its image in cultural texts;
- visions of the destruction of the world as a result of an atomic catastrophe in literature and film;
- the attitude of German philosophers to the use of atomic energy;
- the "blackout" in literary and film dystopias.

Can the spectacular catastrophes in Hollywood’s film productions become a reality? The aim of the course is to familiarize students with contemporary cultural texts, which, on the one hand, emphasize the dangers of the current energy crisis. On the other hand, they criticize the use of atomic energy. During the classes we will discuss selected films and literary works including their historical background and the social and political situation in the 20th and 21st centuries (mainly in German-speaking countries). - Students are able to analyze and to compare literary texts, films and works of art.
- They know examples of texts, films and works of art which represent the trend of catastrophism.
- They are able to use the methods of comparative studies.
- They know the main theoretical works in the field of aesthetics, the history of literature and the history of art.
- They are able to present their point of view and to discuss it in a group of students.
