Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
knows French vocabulary and language structures at B2 level related to science, health, biology, medicine, ecology and international cooperation;
knows basic French terms related to the human body, vital functions, public health, prevention, social campaigns and health recommendations;
understands French texts and spoken materials concerning lifestyle, sleep, stress, physical activity, nutrition, addictions, digital hygiene and work-life balance;
can discuss in French selected issues related to nutrition, diet, food safety, food labels, consumer choices and problems such as obesity, malnutrition and processed food;
can communicate in situations related to everyday medicine, including describing symptoms, understanding basic information during a medical consultation, formulating recommendations and recognising differences between patient language and doctor language;
can present and comment in French on issues related to lifestyle diseases, prevention, ageing society, global health, epidemics and vaccination;
understands the general meaning and main arguments of French-language articles, recordings, infographics, reports and popular science materials concerning human biology, genetics, biotechnology, new therapies, ecology and climate;
can explain and describe in French basic biological processes and phenomena related to the functioning of the human body, using language appropriate for B2 level;
can participate in a discussion on genetics, biotechnology, new therapies, bioethics, artificial intelligence in medicine, medical data, scientific experiments and the limits of progress;
can formulate opinions, arguments and counterarguments concerning health, science, medicine, ecology, climate, misinformation and the responsibility of scientists;
can compare different positions in public debate, summarise other people’s arguments and formulate their own conclusions in French;
can prepare and deliver a presentation in French on a project, research study, scientific problem or issue related to life and health sciences;
can work with authentic French-language materials, select the most important information, summarise it and use it in oral or written communication;
develops the ability to critically assess popular science and medical information, including recognising simplifications, manipulation and misinformation;
can work in a group during discussions, material analysis, mini-project preparation and communication problem-solving.
Assessment criteria
active participation in classes;
presentation on an agreed topic;
one final oral assessment;
attendance: a maximum of 4 unexcused absences per semester is allowed;
minimum passing threshold: 60%.
