Cultural security 3224-BEZKULT-OG
The classes are aimed at acquainting students with the main problems of the strategic culture of Poland. Issues such as identity, the reciprocal influence of cultures, and reflection on the stages of development of national culture will be taken into account. During the classes, the student develops research skills in the field of social anthropology and learns to acquire knowledge independently, making use of the support of an academic supervisor.
The following problems will be discussed:
1. Theories of social conflicts (part I).
2. Theories of social conflicts (part II).
3. Intercultural competence for security ‒ intercultural communication.
4. Small social structures.
5. The nation – anthropological approach.
6. The nation – political approach.
7. From the nation to nationalism.
8. In the circle of ideology.
9. Formation of statehood – an introduction.
10. The state – the citizen.
11. National and ethnic minorities in the politics of Central-Eastern European countries – an introduction.
12. Social security.
13. Cultural security.
14. Real threats to cultural security in the twenty-first century – selected examples.
15. Forecasting of threats to cultural security – analytic methodology.
Student workload:

Upon completing the course, the student:
[Knowledge:]
1) has a basic knowledge of theoretical and methodological approaches to the humanities, especially cultural studies.
2) has a basic knowledge of the terminology of cultural studies, taking into account the research perspectives of Central-Eastern Europe (directions, texts, researchers in the field of cultural studies) and the specific development of these studies in the countries of this region; has a basic knowledge of the terminology of related disciplines, which is indispensable in becoming acquainted with and understanding the cultural phenomena of these countries.
3) has a basic knowledge of the specifics of various cultural models in anthropological terms (traditional, nobility, bourgeoisie, masses), the processes of their transformation and interconnections, as well as their emanations in the symbolic and semiotic spheres, and thus in the arena of the culture, art, literature, and history of Central-Eastern Europe.

1) is able to search, select, analyse, and make use of the information he or she needs from various sources.
2) is able to develop his or her research skills; acquire knowledge independently, making use of the support of an academic supervisor; skilfully formulate thoughts; and present the results of research in the form of oral or written statements (of various types).
[Social competences:]
1) is prepared to critically assess his or her knowledge, to engage in continuous learning, and to supplement acquired knowledge.
2) is prepared to set priorities for the implementation of tasks assigned to him or her and others in the area of social obligations.
Assessment criteria
One condition for passing the subject is compulsory attendance at classes in accordance with the study Regulations at WLS.
Classes will be conducted in the form of lectures and heuristic discussions.
Active participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
Written work (3 to 6 pages) on a topic assigned by the teacher is planned. The deadline for submitting written work is the date set by the teacher during the first or second class. Students absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher conducting the class.
The final grade consists of:
A paper on a subject designated by the teacher (50%).
Oral examination (25%).
Substantive participation in classes (25%).
