The lecture provides for the thematic division of classes into: pan-European lectures highlighting the current situation in Europe (culture, politics, literature) and the development prospects of various fields of the humanities. A significant part of the course will be devoted to the current situation in Italy: the state of the economy and the main political and social problems. Some of the lectures will focus on the broadly understood issues of Italian linguistics and translation studies as an intercultural phenomenon, outlining the prospects for the development of these fields in Italy and throughout Europe. Lectures on contemporary Italian literature are also planned.

The lectures n the summer semester of the academic year 2023/2024 will be thematically focused on Italian countries and cities (before the Unification) aropean politics and culture.

Term 2025L:

Progressing climate change, important historical events, wars, pandemics and seismic shocks worry nations and societies, which, even in periods of relative stagnation, are subject to constant transformation. During the seminar, we will consider the direction of these changes and how changing political and social conditions later influence environmental, local, regional and mental changes in the population. The subject of considerations during the lectures will also be environmental elements: cities and their development, regions and the impact of transformation on societies (technology, progress also in the cultural, linguistic and literary sphere, as well as in interpersonal relations). We will consider how shocks such as wars, epidemics, earthquakes, etc. affect the behavior of entire nations and affect international and intercultural relations. Lectures will be delivered by eminent professors, specialists in various fields: historians, political scientists, culturologists, literary experts, linguists. To sum up, together we will determine whether today's societies know how to draw conclusions from their past and what future can be predicted. Students will write a short commentary on three lectures that they particularly remember and the works will be discussed during the final meeting for the evaluate.

Prerequisites (description)

A university-wide lecture (2025/2026) aimed at students interested in contemporary Europe (and its history), particularly its political situation (including the history of diplomacy), cultural and literary developments, and issues related to translation studies and interculturalism, with a particular focus on Italy. The European context opens the door to presenting the results of multifaceted comparative research. The lectures, moderated by the coordinator, include invited guests, primarily from Italy, but also from other European Union countries and the USA.

Assessment criteria

eaching methods:
- classes in the form of a lecture with the possibility of asking questions and discussions
- analysis of presentations prepared by lecturers
- discussion and joint evaluation of the presentation
- discussing doubts and possible ambiguities
Student work assessment methods:
- current assessment of activity and attendance during classes;
- at the end of the lectures (a week after the end, the student submits a short written essay discussing 3 selected lectures (up to 3000 characters)

Assessment criteria:
Assessment based on presence (60% required) and the result of written work

• attendance at 14 out of 15 lectures - 5
• attendance at 13 lectures - 4+
• attendance at 12 lectures - 4
• attendance at 10-11 lectures - 3+
• attendance at 8-9 lectures - 3
• An additional criterion is a credit for a short written essay
