Culture and stylistics of the Ukrainian language 3222-KSU3K-OG
Contemporary issues of the Ukrainian language with particular emphasis on surzhyk as well as texts in terms of different styles are discussed during the classes.
The main objective of the course is to develop language sensitivity i.e. the ability to recognize (and correct) grammatical and stylistic mistakes and to show students how to deal with idioms in written and oral texts. The students are to discuss the following issues: selection of functional styles in Ukrainian language (scientific, official, language of mass media, colloquial - written and spoken); linguistic error - definition and types of errors (inflection, syntax, phraseology, word choice, word formation, phonetic). The course presents information on the latest trends of modern Ukrainian language, both positive and negative.
Students prepare small research project during term.
The estimated total number of hours that student has to spend to reach the aims of learning outcomes - 30 hours.
Individual preparation for each class 30 hours weekly
Preparing for exam - 30 hours
If it is not possible to conduct classes on university premises, classes
shall be held with the aid of distance learning tools, most likely Google
Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

At the end of the course students:
- know and understand the major issues of developement and functioning of modern Ukrainian language (K2_W06)
- know how to choose sources and information, analyze and interpret as well as present information (K2_U01)
- is able to choose proper methods and scientific tools (K2_UO3)
- is able to to give hypotesis and test them (K2_UO5)
- is able to lead scientific debate (K2_UO8)
- is able to plan and fulfill long-life learning (K2_U11)
- is ready for critical asset of his own knowledge ((K2_KO1)
Assessment criteria
Conditions for completing the course and admission to the final exam:
- continuous assessment, ie active participation in classes, passing tests, participation on individual project (analysing text)
The final mark consists of marks from term (30%) and exam 70%.
The course ends with a written exam, where the assessment criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds (points obtained from the written exam)
60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory)
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)
78% - 86% - 4 (good)
87% - 90% - 4+ (good plus)
91%-98% - 5 (very good
99% -100% - 5! (Very good with an exclamation mark)
Student can sit an exam for the second time in second session. The exam has the same form and condition as during first time.
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires an explanation. The lecturer will decide whether to accept absence or not.
The form for completion of classes on which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
If the total absences excused and unexcused exceeds 50 % of classes, this may be the basis to which the student fails the course.
