During the classes, the principles of culture and stylistics of the contemporary Ukrainian language are discussed.

The main goal of the course is to develop students’ linguistic awareness — the ability to recognize (and correct) grammatically incorrect and stylistically awkward forms, as well as to handle phraseological expressions and idioms in both written and spoken texts.

The following topics will be covered:

Selected functional styles of the Ukrainian language (scientific; official; publicistic-journalistic — the language of the media; colloquial — written and spoken);

Linguistic errors — definition and types of errors (inflectional, syntactic, phraseological, lexical, word-formation, and phonetic).

The course will also present information on the latest trends in the development and functioning of the contemporary Ukrainian language.

Student workload:

Classes (exercises): 30 hours

Independent preparation for each class: 20 hours

Preparation for the final assessment: approx. 40 hours
Total: approx. 90 hours

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the student:

KNOWS, at an advanced level:

S1_W01 – the terminology and methodology of linguistic research;

S1_W04 – the connections between philological studies and their complex relationships with other academic disciplines;

S1_W05 – the psychological foundations of language functioning;

S1_W07 – key issues related to the development and functioning of the contemporary Ukrainian language in various fields;

S1_W10 – the Ukrainian language in speech and writing, in accordance with the requirements defined for at least level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

IS ABLE TO:

S1_U01 – appropriately select sources and information derived from them, and carry out critical analysis, creative interpretation, and presentation of information in the field of the Ukrainian language;

S1_U04 – apply appropriate research methods and tools in the field of Ukrainian linguistics;

S1_U10 – communicate on specialist topics with diverse groups of recipients;

S1_U12 – communicate in spoken and written Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements defined for at least level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

IS READY TO:

S1_K02 – think and act in an entrepreneurial manner, and to initiate activities for the benefit of the public interest or the social environment.

Assessment criteria

The course ends with a final exam.
Conditions for passing the course and being admitted to the exam:
• Attendance at classes
• Regular preparation of assigned materials for each class
Final grade for the written exam is based on the following criteria:
• Full achievement of intended learning outcomes covering all essential aspects – 5.0 (very good)
• Achievement of intended learning outcomes covering all essential aspects with minor errors or inaccuracies – 4.5 (good plus)
• Achievement of intended learning outcomes with some (less significant) aspects omitted – 4.0 (good)
• Achievement of intended learning outcomes with omission of some significant aspects and noticeable inaccuracies – 3.5 (satisfactory plus)
• Achievement of intended learning outcomes with omission of significant aspects or with serious inaccuracies – 3.0 (satisfactory)
• Failure to achieve intended learning outcomes – 2.0 (fail)
The course concludes with a written exam. The final grade is also determined based on percentage thresholds (points obtained in the written exam):
60% - 69% - 3 (satisfactory)
70% - 77% - 3+ (rated satisfactory plus)
78% - 85% - 4 (good)
86% - 91% - 4+ (good plus)
92% - 97% - 5 (very good)
98% -100% - 5! (Very good with an exclamation mark)
