Development of communicative competence in Ukrainian (C1) 3222-50KKKU4C[C2]-OG

The aim of the course is to develop skills at the C1+ CEFR level in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as to enhance students’ language competence for perfect understanding of written and spoken texts, accurate content delivery, expressing personal opinions using acquired vocabulary and knowledge, and effective communication in diverse social situations.

The content of instruction is designed to address students’ cognitive and communicative needs and to support their goals related to acquiring qualifications necessary for their future professions or for functioning in the country whose language they study. As indicated above, the classes include a series of practical exercises focused on basic communicative situations through which students acquire vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

The course ends with an exam.

Student workload:

contact hours (in class): 45 hours;
preparation for classes: 20 hours;
preparation for the exam: 25 hours.

Total: 90 hours (3 ECTS credits).

In the event that it is not possible to conduct classes in person, the course will be held using remote communication tools, most likely ZOOM, CLASSROOM, or other platforms recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Prerequisites (description)

The student should have a command of the language at least at the C1 level. The student must systematically complete subsequent stages of language learning. The student must know Ukrainian at a level close to C2 in order to complete the semester with C2 proficiency.

Learning outcomes

The student knows and understands:
- in an advanced way, the connections between philological research and its complex interrelations with other scientific disciplines (S1_W04);
- in an advanced way, the psychological foundations of language functioning (S1_W05);
- in an advanced way, key issues related to the development and functioning of the contemporary Ukrainian language in various fields (S1_W07);
- the Ukrainian language, both spoken and written, in accordance with the requirements for at least the C1+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (S1_W10).

The student is able to:
- communicate on specialist topics with a variety of audiences (S1_U10);
- communicate orally and in writing in Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements for at least the C1 level of the CEFR (S1_U12);
- manage a team (S1_U15).

The student is ready to:
- think and act in an entrepreneurial manner and to initiate activities for the benefit of the public interest or the social environment (S1_K02).

Assessment criteria

The course ends with a written examination.

Conditions for passing the course and being admitted to the final exam:
- active participation in classes;
- systematic preparation of assigned material;
- timely completion of homework and in-class tests.

The final grade consists of:
- coursework during the semester (30%),
- final exam result (70%).

The assessment criteria for the final exam as well as control tests are presented in the form of percentage thresholds:
60% - 68% - 3 (sufficient)
69% - 77% - 3+ (sufficient plus)
78% - 85% - 4 (good grade)
86% - 91% - 4+ (good plus grade)
92% - 97% - 5 (very good)
98%-100% - 5! (very good with an exclamation mark)

If the student receives an unsatisfactory grade, they have the right to retake the exam in the same form, provided that they have passed the course requirements. The lecturer may set additional conditions for making up absences.

The student is entitled to 2 unexcused absences per 30 class hours; each subsequent absence requires justification.

The form of making up missed classes is determined by the lecturer.

Exceeding 50% of total absences (excused and unexcused combined) may result in failing the course.
