History of Belarussian literature - 19th century 3221-S1-0HL21A
The course is to present a systematic knowledge needed to complete the course, familiarize students with the Belarusian literature of the nineteenth century.
The course focuses on so called new Belarusian literature, which was based on language and folk art. The revival of the Belarusian language and literature is discussed in relation to historical and social events (insurgent activity, a restrictive policy of the tsarist regime, the liquidation of the Vilnius University, the breakdown of student organizations, Belarusian preventing publication). Attention is drawn to the romantic idea of the impact on folklore interests, the role of the Vilnius intelligency and Philomats youth in promoting Belarusian folk art, as well as the contribution of Polish-Belarussian writers in the revival of the Belarusian language and literature (Y. Barshchevski, A. Rypin, Y. Chechot, V. Dunin-Marcinkevich). There is also shown the development of realistic Belarusian literature (works by F. Bahushevich, Y. Luchyna, A. Hurynovich, F. Tapcheuski).
Estimated number of hours that a student should spend on mastering the content is approximately - 60 (30 hrs. of classes and 30 hours. of indyvidual studying)

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student:
1. Knowledge: the graduate understands and has an in-depth knowledge of:
- subject and methodological characteristics of research in Belarusian studies as well as terminology used in this area
- the most significant theories of literary and language studies
- the development process of Belarusian literature
2. SKILLS:
the graduate can
- analyse literary works, using various sources and research methods
- prepare literary or linguistic analyses on his or her own, using relevant methods and research tools
- recognise the most significant literary works of Belarusian, especially the ones written until the nineteen eighties and prepare critical analyses and interpretations
- assess the role of the legacy of particular authors of Belarusian literature against the historical and literary background of Belarus
- present theories of researchers of Belarusian literature and the Belarusian language as well as draw conclusions about the development of the language and literature
- identify the significance of specific historical events for the development of Belarusian literature and the Belarusian language
- provide a relevant interpretation of the development of the Belarusian idea of national independence and its reflection in culture
